At this point, almost everyone has seen a movie already. Over the years, several filmmakers have introduced amazing stories for us to witness unfold, whether in cinemas or in the comforts of our homes. However, like many things, making a movie is often an investment that takes months or even years to finish.
More often than not, making a movie requires a team composed of directors, producers, writers, actors, etc. Every one of these team members usually has their own way of doing their job. Sometimes, because of these principles, many of today’s iconic scenes were made. One typical example is when actors improvise a line – or lines – to make a scene even better than it already is. Well, if this is what you’re into, we’ll be talking about a few of them today.
For this article, we will be showcasing a few behind-the-scenes facts about our favorite movies. Most of the time, several changes are made throughout the filmmaking process. Although some tend to hinder production, plenty managed to improve the film – or at least a scene – to another degree of greatness. Now then, let’s get on with it.
The Dark Knight – The Hospital
For most of his movies, Nolan isn’t quite fond of using animated visuals and prefers to keep things as real as possible – though he does use them to help emphasize his set-pieces. Among the many iconic scenes in The Dark Knight trilogy, the most talked-about moment is undoubtedly the one with Heath Ledger’s Joker walking out of a hospital. Although many believe the actor ad-libbed the scene, it was apparently all part of Nolan’s plan.
During the filming process, the director spent some investment money on an actual building scheduled for demolition. That building was used as the film’s hospital set. To ensure Ledger was at a safe distance when it came crumbling down, the explosives around the building were set to trigger after a few minutes. As a result, mixed with the actor’s excellent performance, fans get to witness one of the greatest Joker moments ever performed on film.
Black Panther – Hey, Auntie
In the earlier years of cinema, actors would often avoid starring in superhero movies, believing they didn’t require much talent. Well, times sure have changed. Nowadays, almost every celebrity wants to have an acting credit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Through the years, the MCU has introduced audiences to several amazing actors, like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Paul Rudd. However, it wasn’t only the superheroes who got the spotlight in these movies.
In Black Panther, fans were amazed at the performance of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa and Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger. However, one co-star was quite surprised at Jordan when they filmed a scene together. It was the part where Killmonger finally met the Queen of Wakanda, his aunt, portrayed by Angela Bassett. Although his character was already quite “disrespectful,” said Bassett, the actress was even more shocked when Jordan improvised the now-iconic line, “Hey, auntie.”
Harry Potter – Pockets Sewn Shut
Although this one doesn’t necessarily affect the filmmaking process, it’s still – to some degree – worth sharing.
Years after its eighth and final installment, the Harry Potter films are still fondly remembered by fans worldwide. Throughout the movies, audiences had the chance to see their favorites, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, grow through every hardship they encounter. One of the characters that often get in their way is Draco Malfoy, portrayed by Tom Felton. Although his character is quite annoying most of the time, Felton is quite the opposite. In the earlier films, the young actor would often hide some candy or drinks in the pockets of his robes – they were big, so fitting them in wasn’t a problem. Eventually, the other stars followed suit, hiding their own treats in their robes, too. Unfortunately, the wardrobe unit didn’t like this at all. By the third movie, The Prisoner of Azkaban, the cast members were saddened to find the robes’ pockets were sewn shut.
